Pete and Zipper

After searching for rural property for over a year in Northern California, we purchased the yet-unnamed Kalikai Farm in July 2008. The farm consists of 12 acres of flat, agricultural land, located in Middle Creek Valley in the town of Upper Lake. Nestled in the Coast Range in Lake County, the property boasts abundant, clean water, fertile clay loam soil, and is embraced by mountain vistas.

With a mild to moderate climate and a high water table, the pasture is nearly always green without irrigation. Twenty walnut trees adorn the west side and provide the house with much-needed shade from the late summer sun. Numerous young redwood trees grace the curving driveway, with a few others scattered about the property. The previous owner planted all of these, as redwoods normally occur at higher elevations and closer to the coast. The predominant native species here is the Valley Oak
(Quercus lobata), which incessantly tries to reestablish itself, to my delight.

A single-story stucco-and-beam house sits on the northern five acres closest to the road, while the southern seven acres sits fallow for now, previously used for oat hay cultivation. A summer dry channel bisects the property (with running water fed by a natural spring until mid-June), with a wild willow thicket on a good portion of the eastern boundary. An organic vineyard planted in Syrah is our neighbor to the west, with an extensive walnut orchard to our east. The vacant 8-acre property to the south used to be a part of this one, but was split off to be sold separately. If ever we are financially able, we hope to acquire the parcel. Combined, the property would go all the way to Clover Creek.
